E104: Mikko Solis Member of Denning International Law Advisory Board

Mikko is a Dr. V. Orestes Romualdez Educational Foundation College of Law Graduate, and currently works as a Board Member of the Denning International Law Advisory Board doing high-impact research for Project Pakistan. Mikko’s journey is riveting, spectacular, and full of wisdom as well as being our third international guest and our first law student from the Philippines!

Mikko and I started almost a full decade before he decided to go to Law School. After graduating and beginning work as an accountant, Mikko would stay on that path, but life would change forever after a super typhoon hit the Philippines displacing him and losing his house, and his belongings. Mikko would turn to online work, being a link builder, and trying to find his way again. Years previous he wanted to attend law school in the capital of the Philippines but didn’t have the money for it. After years of hard work, he would finally be able to get into Dr. V. Orestes Romualdez Educational Foundation College of Law.

Mikko’s first year, due to the pandemic, would be done online, making the transition easy, and loving the work that came with it. But the second year would represent an obstacle, as coming in person, Mikko’s grades would drop, and doubt would cause him to almost drop out in that Fall semester. But after finding a mentor through a friend, Mikko would stick with Law school, ending Law school ranked 3rd among his peers.

Mikko and I took a deep dive into his experience at the IBA ICC Moot Court Competition, which remains the highlight of his Law School journey. After 9 months of preparation, Mikko and his teammates would travel to the Netherlands for an amazing experience. Mikko would speak on this experience at great length, talking about the competition, and the great camaraderie with his fellow competitors making connections, and friends he still speaks to today.

Finally, Mikko stresses to never give up, as you never want to close those potential doors that are on the other side of Law School. Additionally, Mikko has started a podcast of his own, the first episode linked below, all surrounding his love for international law and discussion about the international law issues in the world today.
